Mrs. Stokes’ Super News!
Sept. 3, 2013
Third grade is the Best!

*This is an awesome class*

The “Book in the Bag” Reading Program has started.  Your child needs to read their book in the bag every night and return it the next day to school.  Some books will take longer than one night.

Important:
This week we start our spelling program.  Your child will have a spelling list that is at their level.  Please ask your child about it.

Our class goes to our school library on Mondays.

SEP week is Sept 30- Oct. 4th.  I am so excited to meet with you.  School will be getting out at 2:30pm all that week.

Fall pictures are on Oct. 4th

Parent helpers can start coming this week.
Mondays at 10:30: Mrs. Coronado, Mrs. Webster
Tuesdays at 10:30: Mrs. Eye
Thursdays at 10:30:
Fridays at 10:30: Mr. Hirschi

Important Reminder:  If you need to check your child out of school early you must check them out in the office.  The office will then give you a note to bring to me.  I can then release your child to you.

Reading:  Every child should have a library book at home that they are reading in for at least 20 minutes each night.  This book should be at a reading level that is comfortable for them.  If the book is too hard or too easy please let me  know.  We have also started Literature Circles in our classroom.  For a 1/2 hour each day they are reading in a group with students on their same reading levels.  Then they do various activities to enhance their comprehension of the book.

Math:  We are working on addition, subtraction, and graphs. Also,  please ask your children to look at clocks at your home as often as possible.  They need to understand the concept of time.  They best way to teach them is to give them plenty of opportunities to tell time.  They always ask me what time it is and I say, ” look at the clock and figure it out.”

Writing:  We are constantly writing each and every day.  The students are writing stories, poems, keeping journals etc.

Homework:  This week there is math, reading and spelling.  Also, the September reading calendar.  Please mark on the calendar how many minutes each day that your child is reading.  Then at the end of the month the reading calendar is due back to school.  The calendar is a big part of your child's grade.  Please help them to take on this responsibility.

Final Note:  I am having a great time teaching your child.  We have a wonderful class.  They are a bright bunch of students.  Thanks for all of your support and help at home.  Have a great week!
